New sim and number for travelling - Bank account access?

Hi , I'm heading off to Australia for 4 weeks and was thinking of getting a PAYG sim deal from 'Three' giving me 6 GB of data and unlimited texts and phone calls to UK numbers.
I can use whatsapp in Australia to contact my friends and family there.

The 'Three' sim will obviously give me a new number , how will this affect me accessing my bank accounts?
Any tips would be great

tia

    Ask your bank.

Some might send authentication texts to your registered number. Some might not.

If you switch your registered number to your PAYG number ahead of time you'll probably be OK.

I picked up a SIM card at an Optus desk in the arrival hall. I could still access my banking app and verify transactions

You will have to advise all the banks that have your mobile number of the change in number.

That number will then have to be verified, that would probably be outside of the app or website, so expect a code by email or SMS.

You will still be able to access and use the app without telling them, however you will come unstuck if they ask for extra verification for app or card use by sending you a SMS.
  • What is your current mobile network/plan? Have you looked at their roaming deals for Aus?
  • My current plan is with TalkTalk and there is no roaming plan outside of Europe.
Charges are 95p per min to call and receive, and 65p per min to receive and send a text - so not the end of the world if I need a text verification.

Where are you seeing those charges?

Talktalk (the broadband supplier) provide mobile services through its sister brand Talkmobile. Their roaming charges are here

    https://talkmobile.co.uk/roam-charges

Australia are in Zone B, shows that receiving texts is free (as they are for all other zones).
  • I got that info from online chat....

I think I'm one of the very early users as my monthly PAYG charge is £3 and hasn't increased at all. I didn't know about talk mobile..
In Europe I can use my plan as if i was in the UK but apparently, according to the chat writer, not in the rest of the world including Australia

    I will check again, thanks

I have tje Lloyds,  Nationwide, HSBC and Santander Banking apps on my smartphone and can confirm they keep working no matter what SIM card is in it. Any spending verification is done via the app not text.

Ah, apologies. When Talktalk stopped their mobile product they moved their customers to O2. But there's still mention of a mobile tariff on the Talktalk website but it's well hidden, so some mobile customers seem to have remained

Confirms the charges you've mentioned upthread. I'd double-check that incoming texts are charged for, it's not explicit in the tables and it's unusual with other carriers to charge.

One scary number from the tariff, data charges when roaming are £3 a MB - think that means that streaming one  episode of Corrie will cost about £8000.

Thank you flaneurs_lobster... I asked a direct question this time asking 'how much it will cost to receive a text while in Australia' and was told that there was no charge.
