New driver insurance

Hi,
My 17 year old daughter has recently passed her driving test and looking to add her to our family car insurance. I’ve got a quote to add her as a named driver on our small car (Seat Ibiza) policy with Admiral (my wife and I). It’s come in at a ridiculous +£300/month extra.
She’s not going to be driving very much (twice a week maybe at most to go horse yard if we can’t take her) so currently doing pay as you go with Veygo (about £30/day) but looking to see if there is a cheaper option.
Any thoughts??
Telemetrics policies seem a little cheaper but are still annual around £2k. I’m also unclear if we can maintain our existing policy for my wife and I and take out a separate Telemetrics policy for my daughter or we have to all move across to the Telemetrics policy with my wife as the main driver/policy holder and myself and daughter as named driver. Any guidance please? I’m aware anyone driving on Telemetrics will go towards the driving score, which will only be against the policy holder (no specific scores for named driver). Thanks!

Those that have just passed are vastly more risky than those that are still learner drivers. The EU banned being able to differentiate pricing on gender and so female teenagers pay much more than they used to.

Sounds like you are going to be paying Veygo about £260 a month if its twice a week so there is maybe a question on if the extra £40 to be able to drive ay any time without the faff of having to buy a new policy is worth while or not.

Certainly have a look at Marmalade's Named Young Driver policy which is an add on policy so you keep your main policy and this secondary policy simply covers the vehicle whilst she is driving it. They used to have a PAYG option but ceased offering that one a year or so ago.

Alternatively, do a new business quote on the aggregators to start in circa 24 days time. Just factor in the cancellation costs for your Admiral policy before deciding to jump
  • Thanks. I’ve tried Marmalade but it comes back to say they can’t cover her (doesn’t give a reason).
  • With car insurance, your job can make a big difference to the price you pay. My son was originally quoted while working for a company, but when he changed his occupation to agency work the premium came out £400 a year cheaper. He then saved another £100 by adding a dash cam, and a further £70 by entering the driving licence numbers for all drivers on the policy.

I’d suggest getting a new quote from another insurer for all three of you together. It will probably work out cheaper than sticking with Admiral and asking for a partial refund on the remaining months.

You could look at a pay by mile option, but at 17 it is going to be expensive regardless of what route you take. A black box is going to be the cheapest route, worth looking at those options and seeing what you can get.

    My best advice would be:

Compare quotes from Confused.com, CompareTheMarket, and GoCompare. Yes I know it's time consuming, but its worth it.

Play around with different options like parking on the drive / parking on the street outside of home, and adding relatives onto the license with a long clean driving history.

I'm sure there is a way to get insurance a bit cheaper. My sister recently passed this year as a 17 year old, and I managed to get the quote down from £2800 to £1600 on her 2007 fiesta - simply by playing around with the options when building a quote, without lying obviously.

Lastly, getting a quote in advance even by 3 days can make a massive difference in price too. 21 days in advance would be the most optimal however.

If you're daughter is planning to drive long term, it's best she has her own insurance instead of being a named driver too, as no claims bonuses every year gives massive discounts.

    I hope this helps.

It may be cheaper to change to another company that quotes a more sensible price and cancel an existing policy, even if it is mid term,

  • Thanks. Yep getting quotes from all the comparison sites.

Any thoughts with regards to my question as to whether I could effectively have two policies against the same car (existing policy for my wife and I and a new Telemetrics for my daughter) or must drop the existing policy and take out a single policy covering all 3 of us? I’ve seen it’s possible but can cause complications to have the two policies…

You can do it either way but the daughter's one really should be a top-up policy not a full policy if you go the two policy route.

There is nothing illegal about have having two full policies on the same vehicle but it will cause headaches and in particular in cases where your vehicle isnt being driven at the time of an accident as your two insurers will have to nut it out to decide which of them has to deal with it etc.

Possibly counter intuitive, but have you priced her on a similar car in her own name with parents as additional drivers?
  • Yep it is a fair bit cheaper (though still expensive at approx extra £150/month for normal rather than Black box policy) having my daughter as policy holder and my wife and I as named drivers (including saying my wife will remain the main driver)…strange but so be it! Thanks for your help! As I’m mid term will switch to that and then see what renewal prices are like!
