I guess OP does not have a card for the account. They need to request one & then can withdraw the funds either via ATM or just normal card spending.
Given they have been to branch to prove ID, this should not be a issue.
I tried to apply for a new card online but again, like all other banking requests since the dormancy, I received the same error message that this account was not available.
Go to branch might be better
I doubt they will have the powers to a activate the account as the deactivation was done centrally. Both account holders would have to request reactivation (not necessarily at the same time and in the same place)

Pretty sure this is incorrect. I have re-activated a dorment account and I was only one of the holders.

    OP have you tried this:

You can start this process in several ways.

    • Log on to Mobile or Online Banking and send us a message in our secure chat service. Just ask to reactivate or close your dormant account(s) and follow the steps.
    • Visit one of our branches. Please see our list of ID for information on what you may need to bring.
    • Alternatively, you can contact us

Please have any documents about the account(s) to hand to help us find it quicker. These could be old bank statements, passbooks, correspondence, or any other relevant information relating to your account(s).

Depends. As OP would have ID to prove it is their account. Then it should be possible.

Although that could depend on just how long "A couple of years is".

I did this, I opened a webchat to ask for the account to be reactivated and was told: "Both parties on the account would need to visit your local branch with photo ID, my colleague will be able to complete the checks and have the dormancy block removed." I then called them to explain the situation, I was told nothing could be done over the phone but I could be helped at my local branch, and made an appointment for me. (Which was pointless, as there was just a queue of people without appointments and it was first come first served).

At the branch, I was told there was no way I could access my account without id verification of the other person. He was the epitome of 'computer says no' and refused to discuss it.

I called them again this week, they have referred me to their complaints team and I have also done this through the MSE Resolver tool.

So I'm just waiting for a reply but not holding out much hope after speaking to the previous agents who did not think there was a way around this. Pretty depressing really, I'm skint and I can just see the £800 staring back at me on my online banking but just can't get to it.

The money was paid in before the account was declared dormant!

Have you tried a different branch? Most of the time Santander don’t know what they are doing. It’s worth a try.

Failing that and failing the complaint, write a real letter to them. Something doesn’t seem right here.

Funny you should say that, my partner reckons that if I had gone to his local branch (a more affluent area) there would have been a better outcome.

It's maddening that when the account was accessible, (only a couple of months ago) I could withdraw all of the funds with no question.
