They might have just put an application through for an ordinary account and the system said you could only have a basic one.

Lloyds do one as well, (cash only - no overdraft, no credit card)
Did you mean debit card? A credit card isn't linked to a current account.
Debit card yes. No direct debits. It's really a wallet - when it's empty, hard luck! But it does what I want.

I still have an account that I rarely use.  They used to open Sundays too. I didn’t know the coin machine was gone and that they stopped opening on Saturdays. Branch specific?

Only benefit left is …free dog biscuits

Some branches are still open on Saturdays, according to the hours on their website:

Some do open Saturdays - but not my local.     I don't have a dog!   Pens are good though.   :)

If you don't want an overdraft facility then why don't you just not request one when you open the account?

It’s highly likely Metro Bank will be snapped up and merged into another bank pretty soon.

Why would anyone buy Metro Bank with its expensive branch network and no worthwhile USP. Customer base? Surely if would be more cost effective to attract customers by offering an attractive incentive?

The same could be said of Nationwide's purchase of Virgin Money, and Santander's prospective purchase of TSB.
