I had another 'free' item yesterday, a  box of lets say glass/ tea sets etc.. I got someone interested straight away (the profile was for a female)  and arranged that i would leave this out well wrapped against the elements so buyer could collect after the school run. My advert was clear, I put the weight with lots of photos.

As I was busy I put the box out at just after 8am and sent my address as agreed, which was lucky as at 8.15am a man knocked on the door asking for the bags of clothes he was sent to collect. My OH said there are no clothes- collection was for this box- and man insisted he was there to collect clothes, so my OH called me. Then there was a rather silly conversation with the man insisting he wanted the clothes and me insisting there were no clothes- and my OH eventually getting bored and telling the man he took the box or didn't , as that's all there was, and again closed the door.

I messaged the lady saying item was collected but there was some confusion - and she just said that's OK, she was happy with the items received and said she would be happy to take more if I ever got any.

It all rather confused me, but I assume a reseller doing car boots who usually did clothes - but has decided to branch out and hadn't told the person collecting? At least that's another box gone from storage.

I've recycled lots on freegle/Facebook Marketplace and often it's a woman who contacts me and they send their (presumably) husband to collect the item(s).

I think there's a decent number of people who will collect anything for free that they think they can shift at car boots.

I tend to leave stuff outside as people are so often no-shows, I don't really want anyone knocking on my door as it drives my dog mad and I wfh.

not sure if already mentioned, you could try the olio app,
it's not guaranteed but usually get more reliable community sharing and systems in place to reward reliable users

If I absolutely can't leave the item outside, I insist on collecting within a 1 hour window.

I given and receive some bits on Olio mainly, generally find okay ish (60%) reliability on normal small items which someone could (just about) take regardless of transport.
Where there's logistics eg needing a larger than average vehicle and hence more logistics to plan, then it gets much worse (20%).
