Bed Bugs claim- Jet2

We stayed in a villa in Portugal this July via Jet2 and had bed bugs in our room!

Complaint made to Villa Select who were providing the rep out in Portugal who arranged for new mattresses but the bugs were in the bed frame, all the soft furnishings in the bedroom.

Both my husband and I were bitten all over our face, arms, neck and body!

Complaint made to Jet2 on return to the UK and they have this week called and offer £350 compensation. They have stated as only 1 room of the villa was affected they will only pay a % of the accommodation costs as compensation.

I have photos of all the bugs crawling over everything, images of the bites on our body and GP letter stating the bites were from bed bugs on our return to the UK.

Surely £350 can not be acceptable! I have rejected it and asked for a second review of our case but been told they can not promise they will offer anything else.

I understand ABTA will not advise on compensation so unsure if worth while pursing that route.

We booked a package, £3100 for 3 flights and a weeks villa. Flights would have been approx £1400 for all so say £1700 for the villa self catering

Only two of the three occupants were affected?

£350 is woefully short of what I would expect if the issue is as bad as stated. I am suprised you stayed in the room as I definitely would  not have done. Just changing a mattress is not good enough at this level infestation, stating only one room was affected as the bed bugs would probably have traveled around in your clothes.....Personally I would refuse this but ultimately it depends on what you expect from Jet2 and where you are willing it to take it.

I hope you were ultra careful on your return and did not bring any back with you as bed bugs can be a nightmare to get rid of from you house.

Yes somehow the infestation was only 1 room.

thankfully our suitcases had been kept in a safe room the whole time and I had washed all our clothes during the holiday and kept it all isolated.

we didnt realise we had been bitten until a few days after we came home when all the hives/marks appeared.

it took several days for us to realise there were bugs as having no bite marks, the only way we saw anything was the marks on my husbands pillow after a few days. Only then did we ring the rep and the mattress was changed. She had never dealt with bed bugs so spent €600 on new mattresses which we now realise was pointless as the bugs were in the frame of the bed etc. at this point we were coming home the next day so just wanted to get home!

The OPs claim is weakened by the fact that they stayed in the property for the entire holiday.  I'm not saying that's fair, simply the way the holiday company will look at things.  Accommodation cost £1700 and only 1 of 2 bedrooms was affected.  Reduce by half on that basis, or 1/3rd on the basis 2 were using it.  That reduces accommodation cost to either £900 or £1200 (rounded).  The rest of the villa was still usable, so reduce those figures by at least 50%, probably nearer 70%, and it's not far off what has been offered.
I would push for more, and would be just as unhappy as the OP with the situation.  Purely playing Devil's Advocate by providing possible reasoning from 'the other party'.

No, my husband started noticing the odd mark on his pillow after 2 days of our stay. We thought he’d bleed from a cut on his neck so that’s why we didn’t realise what was happening until half way through the holiday when the marks on the pillows were every morning and fresh!

It might be worth making sure you're clear on the timelines. It's probably just the way it's been typed but it doesn't seem consistent whether you knew out there or only when you got home
