Query EV charging point installation

Firstly you will have to accept my totally lack on knowledge on any of this.

Before I ask about best charger or best tariff and supplier to use I have one very important question.

What do I do if my garage is situation some distance from my house(bottom garden) and with my laptop and partners i pad we cannot get our home hub internet to work there.  We live on a corner plot and the fibre to home comes into the nearest point for Open Reach 's convenience!!! and sits in top end lounge(again for OR ease !!)  I have one round booster dish which gives some extra cover but I can't sit in back garden and get signal, and garage is at bottom garden.  Told by BT several years ago that it doesn't help with having solid internal walls.

So how would all this pan out with be hoping to have home charger on external garage wall (garage does have energy supply) and getting this night time cheaper charging tariffs.  The car will be used for work and do travel on some long journeys so have  good charge to set off is essential.

Many thanks

What car will you be buying? A lot of the time the smart tariff talks to the car over it's data connection rather than the charger. As an example my car is a Tesla Model Y which is linked to Octopus on their Intelligent Octopus Go tariff, it charges on that with no need for a smart charger.

I would also suspect that if you put a Wi-Fi extender in the corner of the house nearest the garage it would easily reach, with a clear line of sight it should be fine for at least fifty meters, if not more. How far is the garage from the house?

I've never had much joy with wifi-to-wifi repeaters, but powerline networking works well for me.

They have come a long way, but it is often a case of you get what you pay for.

I have one of these (hardly high end kit by any stretch) set up at my work to both boost a wifi signal and also provide an ethernet port, it is 18 meters from router and pushes the signal out a good thirty meters from there.

There are three options for connecting up a smart charger.  And different chargers use different ones:
    • Some (like mine) are WiFi and Bluetooth only.
    • Some have a built-in mobile SIM.  These will work anywhere with a phone signal. Check what the fees are for this.
    • Some can be wired in via Ethernet.  You can get power cable for EV chargers that comes with an Ethernet cable built in.  It can then be plugged into your home router.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

You will probably need a new mains cable to the garage anyway, unless it was wired with running a lot of equipment in mind, a charger takes 32A continuous.

When the job is assessed you will find out if you aren't sure already.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • You might not qualify for the "standard" installation from electricity suppliers if the cable length you need is 20m or so. They may do it but charge extra, I could never get a confirmed price for additional work and materials from octopus or EDF.

Might be worth thinking about attaching the cable to a fence or wall so it isn't just lying across the garden. Maybe a bit off the ground to avoid mouse damage and nahe it visible so noone tries to put a spade through it

Ohme cover the cost of a SIM for the first three years but it's not clear to me what happens after then.

    Hopefully someone on here knows.

You can extend a wifi signal as far as you like these days (with enough nodes) with a Mesh network.
You can even extend it outside.

    Thank you all

Should have make and model later this month(work sorting).
As for the hub and my present disk extender, will try and plug in in bedroom closest to garage and see what I get with my laptop in connection.
Garage is about 20 meters away so a better extender might be option!  Don't think an ethernet cable would work!  As for new mains cable to garage we shall see.  We do have several things set up in garage ie freezer and garage door- so maybe need to take a look at cable. Guess will maybe see what supplier of charger ( is type dependant on the energy firm you go with) and judge from there.

Get my head around this before I ask about supplier!!!!

    Many thanks
