Car rental - premium protection insurance

I hope someone can give me some advice: i rented a car from Europcar the cost was £214 for the week. I returned it and all was ok until 3 days later Europcar take £254 from my account. This was due to apparently signing up for their premium protection. When i signed the rental agreement as i collected the car i was not made aware of any amendments they had made to the agreement so i had thought i was just signing the agreement for the basic rental charge of £214. I have informed Europcar of this and also appealed it to BVRLA however they both say it is tough and that i should have read the agreement. My contention is that they never made me aware of the changes they inserted and it feels very unfair, like a scam or a best they have misled me. Having read on online there are a lot of complaints about Europcars practices. Do i have any consumer rights to contest this?
thanks in anticipation

Presumably you declined their excess waiver when arranging the hire?
Do you remember having the discussion about the excess waiver?
Having hired hundreds of cars, with many from Europcar it's never not been a discussion. I have however seen plenty clearly not listening and agreeing to the the waiver.

thanks for your response. to be honest i don't recall the excess waiver ever being mentioned when i collected but if they did i would not have agreed to pay for a waiver as its costs £40 more than the actual rental!0
