Do they have nothing better to do?

A few months ago I got a visit from a TV licence enforcer and after answering all his questions  he said I wouldn't be bothered again.

LIES

He just returned today (it was the same person I compared door cam footage)  and he asked all the same questions.

I told him what I told him the last time I don't watch live TV or record anything I download everything using the internet and amazon prime he said he won't be back I said I don't believe you and shut the door.

Why do you open door to strangers? Expect them to bearing gifts?

The Debt collectors work on peoples anxiety and lack of knowledge of the law .
The contracted debt crawlers are renowned for outright lying and making up utter tosh....shallow threat ,imtimidation etc .
Bullying people into parting with cash is std operating procedure .

As wiith the private parking industry they are good at doing this to a degree and that industry is worth a billion per annum as people just pay up .
Similar tactics are used regarding this but not as bad as the PPC,s

BBC/TV Licensing doorsteppers aren't debt collectors, as such.   If anyone is ever subject to a demand for cash from them then they are not from TVL, but are probably criminals.

Their purpose on your doorstep is more insidious, though.  They want to take a formal confession statement which can then be used in a prosecution.   The good news is that you aren't legally required to speak to them (and they will be stuck if you don't).

Thanks for setting the record straight regarding this .

I was under the impression Capita doorsteppers had similar entrapment methods to private parking debt collectors .
Perhaps the similarity is only "the entrapment"  itself .

I'm afraid I don't know much about Private Parking debt collection.

The BBC/TVL setup is legally complicated, which is one of the objections to it.   But the principle in England and Wales is that when they come to people's homes on their basic sales/enforcement visits, they have no special powers or authority to be there.   Householders have all the power over the situation by virtue of Common Law property rights.

The doorsteppers do want to take a formal statement about TV Licence evasion, but no one is obliged to speak with them (by virtue of PACE).   Questioning about an offence also brings a right to consult a solicitor, though how that would be arranged in practice is unknown.

Well, as I'm not paranoid enough to have a peep-hole or a camera and the door is solid it's a bit undignified bending down to look through the letter box!;-)
