Scottish Bin Hubs - your view? Question for estate agents

Scottish councils have been placing communal bin areas in roads outside tenement flats. Would this put you off buying a property that had these directly outside the flat you were thinking of buying? Young people think it's a good idea but people middle aged and older find them to be a monstrosity.

If they are regularly emptied and the area kept clean then there isn't an issue.  There are some areas where they would be a benefit, others maybe less so.

Have you got a link to the survey that showed the above? Be interesting to see how the views break down by age group.

It wasn't an actual survey but comments on Reddit etc.

I certainly wouldn't buy a property with communal bins in the road outside.  Unless they were emptied every day there would soon be lots of fly tipping around them.

Well I wouldn't want to buy a flat that was right beside the bin area.  Not just the smell or flies but more with the people banging the lids down at 2 am when they remember very late that they needed to put the trash out.
Are you aware of what is being replaced? Typically tenements would be served by a number of 'wheelie bins' that live in the back court behind the block. Sometimes they can be serviced via an access lane but often the only way to empty the things is to take them individually through the common close on the ground floor.

Access problems can cause missed collections and the simple dynamics of larger bins make the logistics easier (and therefore cheaper).

If anything, the bins are further from the apartments than they would be in the old system.

We’ve had these for years in Aberdeen, they are an absolute eyesore, and no-one ever cleans them

They're in front of my rental. Wheelie bins removed because the mucky oinks across the street lack basic hygiene skills but my tenement gets to look at them. Talk about a flat with a view. Council didn't bother telling me, I'd have sold up if I knew.

If there are estate agents here, how much percentage wise would  a property value be reduced by these industrial bins?

I think it depends how they are constructed, and what they look like. Do you have a picture?

As Flaneurs said, there are winners and losers. The winners are the people in the back of the building who no longer have smelly bins just outside their windows. The losers are the ones at the front, who now do!
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I would have thought all occupants of the block would be losers if/when they tried to sell.  Anybody seeing the bins at the front is likely to be put off looking at any unit within the block.

So no actual evidence of how they might be regarded just social media rumblings.

Here is a BBC article about them if anyone is interested in what they look like
