Any ideas when the next Patch Tuesday is?  And can I do this in the evening after work or does it have to be early morning?
Second Tuesday of the month about 6pm UK time.

Patch Tuesday is always the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 10am Pacific Time.  Unless some other urgent update needs to be pushed out, in which case it could come at any time.

Because of timezones expect updates to appear after 6pm UK time on Patch Tuesday.

Thanks all for your suggestions.  I use my computer for general use, internet browsing, internet banking, creating documents using Microsoft Office 2016.

Not being too tech savvy. I think for now I will try and extend support for Windows 10 to Oct 2026 and then decide on what to do sometime next year.

Any ideas when the next Patch Tuesday is?  And can I do this in the evening after work or does it have to be early morning?

As suggested, I will need to sync my settings to the cloud with Windows Backup before doing this and remove Avast?
I just checked my updates and the link to extend was there, couple of clicks, job done.

Patch Tuesday is the second Tuesday of each month.
So the next one is 9th September.
The Windows Updates start being distributed worldwide at 18:00 GMT on that second Tuesday.
You can go looking for them on Patch Tuesday evening with a 'Check for Updates' if you want to.
Otherwise they are usually delivered to you machine sometime after that, most likely overnight or on Wednesday, and once downloaded will prompt you to Restart to install them straight away, or schedule them to install later at a time you pick.
If you don't Restart to install when asked, or schedule a time when the computer will be on, then they will install the next time that you Restart or re-Boot your computer.
(Which I'm guessing is why you say "early morning" ie. because you Shut-Down your computer overnight so they will  download on Wednesday, and unless you Restart on Wednesday, they will install when you turn it on again Thursday morning).

Had been trying to find a decent windows 11 replacement for my  10 year old Toshiba laptop, but in the end decided to take advantage of Microsoft's ESU programme to extend support another year, leaving more time to bargin hunt a replacement.

Took a few sessions to get this done since laptop had a number of  updates and security fixes  that had not been downloaded for a few months ( I rarely use the laptop ), and One drive cloud storage which I had also never used had to be enabled for settings to be backed up and saved therein.

However, got to a stage where the invitation to enable ESU finally appeared in the updates settings, and few clicks thereafter, confirmation eventually  received that extended support now in place.

Incidentally running Norton 360 for virus protection ( a cheap recent £10.50 purchase from Amazon).

     - Incidentally running Norton 360 for virus protection -

IMHO that'll be hammering the performance of 10yo laptop.

    In all likelihood.

However only fire up the laptop every couple of months for archiving documents and occasionally changing playlists created on WMA and saved to portable devices and storage. Main intensive use of the laptop is once a year for annual self assessment tax return.

For day to day tasks a Samsung tablet is utilised for everything else (convenience factor is way off the scale compared to laptop).  Norton far more important in the context of the tablet virus protection.

I'd make the same point regarding the tablet, Google Play Protect and Samsung Knox is quite sufficient
