Thanks to all those who have responded, and here's my long-overdue update:
The dishwasher waste pipe was replaced by DH - not as tricky a job as feared, but we still had some leakage though the machine would run. That was corrected by a couple of jubilee clips. Total cost: under £20. No problems since.
The shop never billed us: DH went in and the engineer had marked the job as complete, so I'm guessing he didn't want any more to do with it. We continue to use the door seal that he told us was ruined, and I've yet to see it leak, so I never asked the shop for the one the engineer supposedly ordered.
I'm guessing we've saved around £180-200 and learned a few things.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
