Aldi does “salmon pieces” (still large, tho) for £2.85. Usually you get 2 or 3 biggish pieces. Slightly odd shapes but i can live with that.
@ouraggie I recently noticed Lidl has those as well and have been meaning to try them. They're a good buy you think?

I was going to mention Lidl's as that's where I normally shop.  BUT only buy them if they have a long best before date and ensure they are used sooner or frozen asap otherwise I think they go off a bit quicker than other shops.

And I used to love the fish counters at Sainsburys or Tesco - they'd have a side of salmon for £15/kg and I'd buy it but get them to cut it into portions and bag each one up (really getting my money's worth!!) so I could pop it in the freezer when I got it home and pull out one portion at a time as needed.  Neither shop has fish counters anymore and rarely has a side that cheap - though Tesco did at Christmas (I bought 2!).

Waitrose is generally quite expensive for fish in my opinion but if you go on Fridays they have (or used to) do 10% off anything from the fish counter.  They are also about the only place I'll buy fish on it's last sell by day.  I did in fact snatch an absolute bargain a year back when they had 3 trout left and wanted to get rid so I got all 3 for about 60p.

I brought half price sides of salmon from Tesco and Sainsbury's at Christmas and Easter and portioned to freeze.  They tend to do it when they have their half price joints of meat.

i do use Waitrose fish counter and tend to go in the evening Thursday or Friday before the fish and meat counters close they will put the fish / meat they reduce bagged up and reduced on top of the counter I've picked up some great bargains eg monk fish and salmon and steak 3/4 off.  It's worth seeing what time they close their counters ours are usually about 7pm when they start cleaning them.  I portion up and freeze as soon as I get home.

Both Aldi and Lidl sell reasonably priced sea bass which I tend to eat same day or freeze.

I love this recipe from the beeb Good Food

    https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/simple-fish-stew

it is easy but very delicious.

We shop at Lidl, (occ. Aldi) for orange sticker fish and frozen fish (salmon & tuna), but we do divert to Morrisons, because they do frozen clams in the 3 for £10 range which we use to make spaghetti alle vongole. We also buy M's jars of fish eggs for smoked salmon/creme fraiche/blinis/scrambled eggs celebration breakfast.

Quick and tasty was something I first had in a pub restaurant.

Baked potato with prawns and stilton.
I've used Dolcalate which is more delicate but still strong tasting.

I also used to buy reduced fish for a fish pie and freeze it until I was ready to make it. I'd do more than one and freeze the other.
Another short cut was using a bagged fish/white sauce. Not as nice as homemade but passable. Don't freeze those though. Creats water

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

We are also in a rural location and a bit of a drive to our nearest town.  I like to have some frozen Prawns, Salmon & white fish fillets in stock when I can't get fresh. I also like to have tins of white crab meat for Thai Fish cakes, tinned Mackerel to throw in a curry and for sandwiches. I have tried to cut back on Tuna because of residual mercury content but still enjoy a tune mayo baked potato and Tuna pate with salad occasionally Smoked salmon can sometimes be picked up on offer and is good in scrambled egg. I make a quick pasta sauce with prawns :- soften some onion, add a tin of chopped tomatoes, season to taste. Throw in a bag of frozen prawns (no need to defrost) add finely grated zest of half a lemon. Once prawns have heated through serve with some Spaghetti or Tagliatelli and some crusty bread to mop up the sauce.
I think a  Delia recipe for a quick grilled fish dish:- lightly oil a grill pan and put white fish fillets under the grill ( I dot with a little butter) when fish starts to turn opaque spread with a little mayonnaise heat the Mayo under the grill then sprinkle with some mixed finely grated cheese and fresh bread crumbs. Watch it like a hawk so you don't burn the breadcrumbs.
My Mum's " Making things go a long way pie"  Mix a mashed up tin of Salmon with some mashed potato and white sauce. Put into a buttered dish , sprinkle with cheese  and bake in a moderate oven for approx. 30 mins for a crust to develop on top and sides. Real comfort food. When I was a child I liked it with tomato sauce but now prefer some green veg! We don't mind the bones in tinned fish just mash them up well. ( good source of Calcium) but you can easily pick them out. This can be made in advance and kept in the fridge for a couple of days.
  • My go to fish recipes are, frozen salmon fillets from Lidl, straight out of freezer, topped with pesto and cubes of feta (i store feta in the freezer (i chop it up when i open it) otherwise it goes off really quickly). Smoked Mackerel fillets squished and mixed with yoghurt and chopped dill or chives or parsley (herbs from the garden). I have it on oatcakes but it would work well with jacket potatoes. I also freeze the mackerel fillets as I cant eat them before theyre out of date once opened.

I know what you mean! Fish can feel pricey, but there are a few ways to make it more budget-friendly. I usually buy frozen fillets like tilapia or pollock they’re much cheaper than fresh but still taste great when cooked right. Canned tuna or salmon are also staples for us; I use them in pasta, fish cakes, or simple salads.

For recipes, we love baked fish with a squeeze of lemon and garlic, or a quick stir-fry with veggies and soy sauce. Another easy winner is making fish tacos just season and pan-fry, then wrap with tortillas and a little slaw. Keeps things fun without spending too much.
