Parking Charge Parkmaven unfair

I parked in the Buttermarket in Ipswich. The system reads the registration plate on entry and you pay when leaving, putting in your reg number. When I put in my reg (correctly) it said there was no record of this reg having arrived. So it refused payment. Puzzled, I put in the reg no. again, and this time it accepted payment.
A week later I got a parking charge with a photo of the car leaving and the reg plate, saying I'd not paid. I wrote back showing the payment made on my bank statement. They've replied saying this is not evidence I paid and that they couldn't find any VRM entries that could be linked. The letter said the system relies on a matching VRM entry. It clearly wasn't working - but they don't accept this. They've offered to reduce the charge to £20 if I pay soon. I'm tempted - just to avoid the hassle, - but feel aggreived. If I don't pay, and make an appeal to POPLA then if that fails I'll be liable for £100.
Anyone else had this?
