I think you might have heard that news item a few decades ago.  I think I heard it too but it was so long ago I can't remember

No, sadly not.    You have to be on pension credit etc.  for it to be free.      There were some articles on the web saying it was going to be free to all over 75s but it looks like they turned out to be rubbish.

Pay your taxes, save your money and work hard and pay£169 a year.   Don't work at all, don't pay your taxes, don't save your money and you get it for free.

I believe someone has started a petition to campaign for free tv licences.

Personally, I hope it goes nowhere as it would mean many people of pension age would qualify who can easily afford the licence and, some might argue, have more time to watch television and get their moneys worth than younger people.

Many people who have worked all their lives & paid taxes don't pay for it... Not everyone is lucky enough to have saved during their lives.

That website appears to be generating a lot of completely false clickbait articles - we've had at least one more appear on the boards today (I think relating to State Pension Age)

That article doesn't even have the right price for a TV licence in it..."For many pensioners, paying over £159 a year for a TV licence was a difficult expense to justify."

However that being said there is an article floating around in some red top tabloid about somebody who got a refund for a TV Licence £159 payment made in 2022 that it turns out they didn't need to make and they trying to get it back (this story has been picked up by other Reach PLC owned tabloid websites) so i suspect that's the source.
