Was looking at windows laptops, but now thinking a Chrome book may suffice for general web browsing, youtube and the like.
can Chromebook RAM and hard drive be upgraded if necessary, or again does it depend on make/model?
This is the first one for consideration.

IMHO you'd be buying into an end-of-life platform as Google as announced ChromeOS and Android will be merged - Google is merging ChromeOS and Android into 'a single platform'
To build down to a price point, most Chromebooks use RAM and UFS flash soldered onto the motherboard so upgrades are not possible. But for their intended use of browsing the web, there's no need for more than what comes installed. If you are still interested - The best Chromebook: top Chromebooks for every user | TechRadar1 -
Hard drive capacity on most Chromebooks is minimal and often slow. They are pretty much dependent on an internet connection to work and assume the cloud will be used for storage.1

I have a 7 year old pixelbook and still use it daily. Brilliant bit of kit, Purchased S/H and was a bargain. If you want to try on Windows or Mac machines before purchasing download "ChromeOS Flex" at no cost, using these instructions

I have a pixelbook go i5 8gb 128gb. purchased from CEX a few months ago for £225. This was in like new condition with original packaging and charger etc. Still getting 10 hour battery life between charges.
Brilliant laptop that feels very high end. Dare I say, built like a macbook.
I run an extension on chrome so there's no ads on streaming sites, even youtube.

I also have a secondhand Pixelbook Go purchased for around the same price and I agree they are exceptional value for money - well-built premium-feeling machines that still run very well despite being quite old.Official MSE Forum Team member. Please report all problem posts to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com1

I have a Chromebook as I got it free with a mobile phone contract. I find the Internet surfing fine but it is a limiting product as neither a laptop or tablet.
I would not buy one. I would probably buy a tablet as they are portable and touch screen0 -

It's £499, but the purchaser has a school email address which is sufficient for a £100 discount (offer ends 24/08).
At £399 I recon that's quite a bargain.1 -
