Consumer rights

I bought an lp player from hmv in march 23. My daughter has used it 6 times or approx she's been collecting lp. Then now she's been playing it didn't work then we tried different plug sockets then after a few the back outlet started ti smoke. My friend who worked for fire brigade advised stop trying and destroy wire. We asked Crosley and HMV who bought off and they saud as warranty is 12 months even consumer rights they would not expect to work after the 12 months. I fund this ridic. It was almost 100 quid and doesn't last longer than 12 months? Does consumer rights say something like this should last longer? They're saying I have no claim?

You may have a claim, but after 6 months the onus is on you to prove the fault was inherent and not caused by something else.  What you describe may be a result of a component burning out, but HMV are also entitled to ask you to reasonably prove it wasn't caused by a damaged cable, dust in any ventilation, operating the unit in conditions it's not designed to operate in, etc.

Destroying the wire may have been a mistake.  I presume your friend advised to do so to stop you continually trying to get a smoking electric product to work, but it's removed something that may have been the cause.

Get an electrician to take a look, determine what the fault is and write you a short report.  Then go back to HMV with that.

In terms of outcome, at best you're maybe looking at a £50 refund for a 2.5 year old item.

Ah ok, I thought consumer rights would cover this we ovs don't have cable I didn't want her trying while I was out. It was £89  just upset how long it lasted. But also their response saying 12 month warranty means that's long enough to last. I thought that was a bit ridiculous. I've had kettle's and hairdryers that last longer

Consumer rights would cover it, you just need to show the problem was there when you bought it or was inevitable because of a design or manufacturing flaw rather than the fault arising from the way you used it.

They've been a bit silly with their explanation of the warranty, but that's separate to your consumer rights.  There's no obligation to provide a warranty at all.

I'm amazed that your friend - a fireman - would advise you to destroy the cable.

Not using it would surely have been sufficient?

As you've actually destroyed part of the product yourself I'd suggest you have no consumer rights claim.  You might have damaged the cable yourself and then destroyed the evidence.

I genuinely don't know what sort of device the OP means.  If it's a portable device using USB charging were they using the original charger?

    Could be.

Or one of the other 161 "lp players" shown on the HMV site.

Most of which look like the Dancette I had in the Sixties.

Now you know it  is called a lip player.

The Op says it was a crossly and cost £89. Link fits the bill.
