I booted my laptop from the usb and linux mint loads ok, but the wifi adaptor does not connect.

When you say "does not connect" do you mean that you don't see any wifi device shown, or that it shows but cannot connect?
I've installed Mint on a variety of PCs/laptops and it has been literally years since I have had to install drivers for any commonly available hardware - a huge library of drivers is already built into the standard kernel.
If you're unsure exactly what the status of the device is, you can go to a command line prompt and type in "dmesg" and that will show you all of the devices that the kernel has attempted to initialise, along with error messages if it has tried and failed to find an appropriate driver.

The issue seems to have rectified itself after a few restarts.
