Possible to buy a number plate under £15?

And I don't mean £14.99. :)

Going to put the damaged car through MOT to see if repair is a doable option. I know it'll fail on the plate as things stand so I'm looking to buy a front one only.

Go on eBay & there's listings for £5. Great stuff.

Except when you put in your options and make it basic as basic can be (no borders, no 'gel' lettering etc) it then spits out £14.99.

I can get a plate for about £5 but annoyingly that has to be an EV plate & Google says it's illegal to use an EV plate (green edging) on a non-EV car. Not sure why extra colouring should cost 2/3 less.

Or is £15 as cheap as you can get one these days? I know £15 isn't megamoney but when I'm not convinced the car is fixable within a reasonable price I don't want to spend a penny more than I have to really.

As per @sammyjammy . You get 10 working days to return it to the same centre for a free retest (i.e. they'll look at the new numberplate and pass it if all else was in order).

Get a £5 EV plate and put an English, Welsh or Scottish sticker over the green bit.

That can't be true considering the number of 10+ year old diesel 1 series and Golfs I've seen sporting them  :D

Why not just let it go through the MOT, if it fails on the number plate alone you can buy the £15 one and get them t retest it for free?  If it fails on other things as well you can decide if its worth fixing.
It was considered actually & I'm still undecided over it.
Get it done & it just rules that out & speeds up the process.
Don't get it done & if it's that that holds things up then it's annoying.

I may get 10 working days but they're pretty useless if I can't use them.

By that I mean I have 2 days of a 5 day break from work where I can get it in. It's in on the 1st of those 2 days.

Anything that needs to be taken in to the next week is a problem because work are being difficult about time off/out.

So basically it could do with being sorted one way or another on those 2 days.

So simple when you say it. :)

    You have a point.

When so many cars are running around with stupid clearly illegal fonts & stupid plates like DR*****1******5AMM then it'd be a bit of a kick in the you know what to get done for a bit of green paint.

You can get a number plate from a Mercedes or any other Group 1 dealer for about £12. I was personally amazed they did them so cheap - and they're metal BSAU145e too.

You think that putting it in for an MOT will tell you whether its fixable or not?
