Have you checked the cost of roaming with your current network?
SIMs for tourists in Japan (like most things) are expensive, think £25 for 20GB would be typical.
What phone do you have? Needs to have 4G for data (although not necessarily VoLTE/4G as you don't need calling).1 -
You can pick up a local sim in convenience stores such as 7-11 / FamilyMart but activating one can be a pain - my son had trouble in October with the first one he bought - the activation website really didn't like accepting non-Japanese ID. I would highly recommend getting an esim compatible phone.1
