Local sims Japan

Hello, does anyone have ideas/suggestions about buying a local sim to use in Japan please? I'll be there for 3 weeks. Won't be needing to make calls but may need data if I can't find wifi. My phone is not compatible with esim as it's too old!

  • Have you checked the cost of roaming with your current network?

SIMs for tourists in Japan (like most things) are expensive, think £25 for 20GB would be typical.

What phone do you have? Needs to have 4G for data (although not necessarily VoLTE/4G as you don't need calling).
  • You can pick up a local sim in convenience stores such as 7-11 / FamilyMart but activating one can be a pain - my son had trouble in October with the first one he bought - the activation website really didn't like accepting non-Japanese ID.  I would highly recommend getting an esim compatible phone.
