I've bought 4 vehicles since 2019, all 4 I've had to pay for by BACS 24 hours before collection.

Makes for a stressful 24 hours, as if the dealer goes bust you will be lucky to see even a fraction of a penny in the pound back, as your money would go straight to pay any priority creditors, like HMRC, and any left over gets shared out amongst possibly hundreds of creditors including yourself.
You have the option to walk away and go somewhere else.

    Of course.

However my empirical data suggests that any dealer that I would choose would do this as 100% of the dealers in my random sample (admittedly only 4 out of the thousands in the country) did it.

Most driveway traders will be more than happy to accept cash on collection too......

I also have the option not to buy a car in the first place, or to buy one on a budget that I can afford to lose and chalk up to experience.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Toyota agreed to both tyres and mum payed and picked up the car today. They explained that it's the American take over that makes payment more complicated and can't use like a simple card reader on the day of collection. They emailed my while in showroom with a secure payment link.
Also she apologised for the bumpy experience and said she can't help it but she did best she could. It wasn't the best experience and if anything I will think twice about buying another car from them. I bought a Yaris a few years back and it wasn't like this. I am just relieved that mum finally has a car but it's been worrying and stressful for her.
