I did an ashes interment in an old grave that hadn't been used for a long time in a Methodist grave yard a few years ago.
It had a full set of kerbs and then a concrete top over the grave that was covered in stone chippings.
Rather than have to break and replace the concrete we got the grave digger to dig to the side and underneath a section of the kerb and were then able to place the ashes casket under the concrete slab and back fill.
If you are short of time to get the kerb set removed or would prefer not to disturb the grave to that degree then that might be an option worth discussing with the grave digger.
The grave I was working on was never going to be used for further ashes or coffin interments so that will be something else to think about if you are likely to want to use your family grave again.

    Thank you for this information.

Once my Mums ashes are placed in the grave it is then considered full so she is the last person that can be placed there

Sounds like I would have to speak to the staff digging the grave first to find out if this way would be possible. Before committing to a hiring a  stonemason..I know  the first person to go into the grave was in 1959...the last person to go in was 2005.

I'm confused myself as to why all the kerbing needs to be removed. I would have thought if I can remove the concrete slab that is resting on the kerbs. Assuming there is no further concrete placed on the actual soil they would be able to dig.

Hopefully by the end of the day tomorrow I will have more news and I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's good.

Most places will allow up to eight ashes interments in a full size grave so it might be worth checking this with the council too.
Depending where you are in the country graves are expensive and limited. I always advise clients purchasing new rights to always consider digging as deep as allowed, even though there is an additional cost, so that it can be used in the future even if at the time they are only planning on one or two interments.
Good luck for today, hopefully you will get all the answers you need and will be able to get your mum laid to rest on the planned date without further stress for yourself.

    Hi all.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for taking the time to offer advice during what has been a difficult and stressful time.

Just wanted to update that I managed to get the kerbs and stone slab removed late yesterday and after the cemetery inspected it this morning it's all prepared correctly. so Mums internment can go ahead as planned..

While I'm sure tomorrow will not be the easiest day I am so relieved we can fulfill mum's last wish.
     Thanks again

I'm so relieved for you. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.

After all the stress, just be kind to yourself, and maybe others who don't understand how challenging the last week has been?
