Incorrect meter reading
Hi all BG have been using incorrect estimated meter readings to generate a bill, as in my old analog gas meter reads 445670 however BG have been using 04456.0 this has been going on for over a year obviously if I tell them them this would make my bill in the region of £40,000 any suggestions how to resolve this thanks

An old analogue domestic meter should only have 4, if imperial, or 5, if metric, digits in a read. Your 6 digit read is suspect so are you including the numbers that are boxed in red ?1

gas meters normally just have the 4 integers and 2 decimals1

this is a picture of my actual gas meter

It looks like you have an extra digit on your reading. If you use the correct reading in your calculations then maybe you only owe £4000. It's not a small amount of money but to be fair, you have been using that gas and not being correctly charged for it.jim112 said:Hi all BG have been using incorrect estimated meter readings to generate a bill, as in my old analog gas meter reads 445670 however BG have been using 04456.0 this has been going on for over a year obviously if I tell them them this would make my bill in the region of £40,000 any suggestions how to resolve this thanks1 -
how long have you been in the house / how long has the meter been there?
It could be that the opening readings has been entered incorrectly, and their internal systems have changed each reading as a bill of £40 would not be right.0 -
thank you the last meter reading which is an estimate from british gas in may 2025 is 4741.1 so do i give them the meter reading from the gas meter and explain the error, becuase if you do the calculation the units of gas will be 100 times more is this correct0

been in the house 40+ years the previous supplier had the full 5 digits though i checked a previous bill it looks like that BG added a zero in the first columnDE_612183 said:how long have you been in the house / how long has the meter been there?

so this is the first bill with BG?
I think this looks like a "change of supplier meter read error" - go to BG tell them the current meter reading - do you have the final bill from your old supplier?0 -
When did you change supplier ? Have you got the closing read from the final bill ? Timeline here is essential.jim112 said:
