Agree about the foam washer, although they seem to work ok on stainless sinks. The nut doesn’t need to be that tight though. The water’s not under pressure after all. Overtightening is probably how that one got splitstuart45 said:All the plumbers I know sling that foam washer away and use sealant. They also get the backnut tighter than hand tight.1 -
They normally tighten them up by hand, and them nip them a bit with the pump pliers.1

I have a pop up plug/waste. Did go into B&Q, but no nut available unless I got whole waste set. At the time, I did not bring original set to find size/type. Also regarding tools I do not have wench/spanner that could open wide enough to go around a retainer nut - so may need to borrow one.1
