Leak underneath bathroom sink

If you've got Screwfix etc. nearby, you could pick up a basin waste seal kit for less than £5. It's a 3 piece kit that's easy to fit, and works really well.1

Baggypuss said:retainer nut is splitAlmost certainly the cause of the problem. Two solutions - a new black nut, or a 'fix'! Clearly the first option is best.Q - is the chrome waste that's visible inside the basin in good condition? Would you prefer to replace it all - new waste and nut?You can certainly bodge a repair to a nut like this by wrapping a 'jubilee' clip around it to keep it firm, but best to replace.1

Chrome waste you mean this ? Not sure in good condition1

A complete new waste will be less than £10. All you need to do now is knock the old one up. It's probably siliconed in, so might need a bit of force. Clean up the basin faces, and get the new one in. Get the nut on hand tight, but then nip it up with a pair of pump pliers etc.1

I did reconnect black nut with washer and turned on tap. Water was coming out from sides not middle.
B&Q is near. I am aware they can be pricey. I will look at whether to go for new chrome waste or just black nut or Basin mate.
Many thanks for all the suggestions.
I will update as to how it goes.0 -
There are some decent videos on YouTube showing how to do it.
The one below shows fitting a “clicker” waste but the fitting process is the same.
Sometimes the waste itself has a slot cut in the threaded section for a separate overflow. The waste that you have doesn’t as far as I can see. Make sure you buy the correct one.

Baggypuss said:Chrome waste you mean this ? Not sure in good conditionIt looks perfectly fine, tho' a brand new one with look finerer. What type of plug does it have - pop-up? Or just chained? And, is there an overflow hole in the basin side?Tbh, with all that sealant, the waste shouldn't leak even with a loose nut, as it should have 'set' in a manner that's watertight. So I'd suggest the sealant needs redoing in any case, even if you replace only the nut.In any case, even if you track down a 'nut', it'll cost silly money like a £iver, whereas a complete new waste can be had for around a £enner. A quality one like Alpine only a few squid more.B&Q are actually quite reasonable. Or, do you have a Screwfix or Toolstation nearby? Before buying a new waste, I think it'll be worth removing the old one, so you can compare them for length and stuff. What tools do you have? An adjustable wrench - 'waterpump pliers'?

Sorry - senior moment 😁2 -
All the plumbers I know sling that foam washer away and use sealant. They also get the backnut tighter than hand tight.2
