The 4790k is from 2014.  The 3200G is from 2019.

Intel processors at this time pretty much wiped the floor with the AMD equivalents, but that AMD will be on a newer platform and effectively catch-up to an extent so it effectively balances itself out between the two.

I’ve given it a fettle, ie downloaded latest motherboard drivers, made sure windows is bang up to date, reduced the graphics ram. It is much livelier now!

I did a deep scan with defender, but I think I will double check with malwarebytes.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

The 4790k was a beast of a chip for it's time, the 3200G was not, I gamed on a 4790k and it was brilliant back in 2014 and even through to 2018 it held it's own. It is odd the total reversal, now the best AMD chips are ahead of Intel, generally more powerful, the X3D variants specifically for gaming and far more power efficient.

I also agree with others, 8GB is just not enough, 16GB should really be the baseline, even just browsing can swallow up huge amounts of RAM.

Upgrade RAM to at least 16GB will help. Is it currently single stick of RAM?
    Any SSD?

I've started off by reducing the video RAM from 2GB to 0.5GB, and I'm downloading drivers currently. I'll update the BIOS, although I doubt that will make much difference.

Both RAM slots are full at the moment, so to upgrade I'd need 2x8GB.
Probably pop to larger local CEX and pick 2 sticks

That's about a third of the price of new RAM?

    New 2 x 8GB RAM would be £35
DDR4 3200 8GB stick £8 each. They charge postal for each item, unfortunately. Larger CEX may have a chance of matching pair.
