LocalPhone, which I discovered through MSE several years ago is the cheapest for me.
The credit can be added in units as little as £1, and doesn't expire. VAT is added to the credit amount. E.G when you add £2 credit, you are charged £2.40. Calls to UK landlines are then charged at 0.5p a minute (effectively 0.6p per minute inc VAT). It works for me as a good backup for when my free RWG mobile minutes have run out.
The rates for calling mobiles and international numbers are pretty good too.
So say you add £2 credit, and you are charged £2.40 for including VAT, and the call rate is 0.6p a min, then is Voipfone a better deal at a call rate of 1p a min, when having £2 credit with VAT already included?

Sorry for the confusion. Let's say you add £2.00 credit. You pay £2.40 because VAT is added at the checkout.
After that, the amount deducted from your credit is 0.5p per minute, if you call a UK landline for example.
So you are not paying the VAT twice. They send an email when my credit drops below £1, then I top up as and when I need to.
  • To further clarify, when I say 0.5p, I mean half a penny. So a 60-minute call deducts 30p from your credit.

So, £2 credit (plus 40p extra for VAT) at 0.5p a min, is cheaper than Voipfone, which is 1p a minute (with no extra for VAT)

Hi guys, I have checked out Viber and they have pay as you go (they call it World Credits) and it works out to 0.14p a minute apparently (including VAT), so that looks the cheapest one so far

VOIPFone do both PAYG or subscriptions

Andrews & Arnold are technically a £1.20 subscription but given its so low I'd throw it in there too
Thank you for the info. I've never heard of Voipfone, looking it up now
Have used them for 20 years. They were more aimed at businesses than home setups but when hooking up with someone who's family is overseas and BT charging £1.35/minute for calls home you take what you can find and for me that was 2.5p/minute calls with Voipfone.
It seems that calls to UK landlines is 1p a min, - that is cheaper than Skype, which was 2.1p a min or something. So you downloaded a Voipfone app to your mobile phone and call from that?
They are a standard SIP provider so you can use "their" app or any other VOIP software you prefer. Obviously theirs is pre-setup so it's simpler but I've used a few different softwares over the years and in many of them they were a preconfigured provider.  Dont know if they've changed it but historically "their" app was just another off the shelf software just defaulted to select Voipfone.

There is a second app which is for configuring more advanced features but you won't need that (eg have the call routed to desk phones when you're in the office but divert automatically to mobile if your mobile is outside the office)

As well as having it on your mobile you can install on a computer or have physical voip phones. Just to be aware though, having multiple devices signed in at the same time can cause behaviour issues with phone ringing on incoming calls. The proper way of dealing with it is to have extensions but they come with a charge and the problem doesnt cause issues for outbound calls nor the actual inbound call.

" so you can use "their" app or any other VOIP software you prefer." - what do you mean any other VOIP software? Sorry, i'm not that tech savvy! :-)
There are many different generic apps that will work with different SIP providers... think of it like physical phones, you could choose a BT, Panasonic, Gigaset or one of the many others which is totally independent on if your landline comes from BT or Virgin Media etc.

You can use Zoiper, SoftCall, MobileVOIP, linphone to name but a few... they have different features, some have a free and a paid for version. If you arent bothered then just stick to their own one.

    Hi everyone,

Now Skype has ended, does anyone know of a good replacement company that does PAYG internet to landline calls? I have looked at Viber, but it seems they do monthly subscriptions. I don't want to subscribe monthly as i only call landlines here and there and paying every month for something i barely use would be a waste of money.

What PAYGO internet to landline companies are you guys using?

Can you clarify what you mean by 'PAYG internet to landline calls'?
I use Vonage VOIP over broadband using a standard DECT handset.
It costs just over £10/month but calls to UK 'landlines' are free (as far as I know, traditional 'landlines' don't exist any more - at least they won't after 2027).

Hi Beachcomber, just to say i was mistaken by Viber. It appeared on their website to say that calls were 0.14p a minute, but it actually seems that it's 14p a minute, which is rubbish

PAYG internet to landline calls is where you can buy credit and use them to call landline phone numbers. The credit stays until you use it all, so £10 credit could last a long time if you don't call landlines much.

I think you are being too particular with 'landline'. It doesn't matter if you use a DECT phone or a landline phone with a curly cable attached. Landlines mean non-mobile phones. Think of calls you make to offices, hospitals, GP's etc, that will be a landline number, and it doesn't matter what phone handset they use.

Ok, but what do you mean by 'internet call'?
Do you mean VOIP over broadband using a VOIP adapter or using a dedicated VOIP phone or do you mean via a hub with an analogue 'digital voice' socket?

An app on a mobile seems to be the preferred mechanism
