if the car is in a secure place, do you  have a button on the driver's door pillar to switch alarm off?

I have one that I use if my dog was  left in the car at a show.

I press the switch, close the door and lock it as normal.

It prvents the dog setting the alarm/immobiliser off.
Sounds like you have a interior movement detector in the car.

Best bet for op is just to put key in ignition & turn car on.
You disconnect the alarm to leave the car parked, not when you are in it.

What would putting the key in the ignition  achieve, and more to the point how would you do that  after  you have locked the car?

Key in turns off the alarm, he doesn't mean to not set it. :)

That'll just turn the ultrasonic sensors off, not the alarm itself.

Modern cars have the transponder as part of the circuit board with the buttons on.

The way to tell for sure is to remove it and see if the car will start with the bare key (ONLY TRY ONCE*) then replace it and start the car.  If it doesn't start with just the bare key and a key symbol appears on the dash then there was no transponder in the key- on older cars they are a tiny tube just a bit bigger than a grain of rice dropped/glued in a cavity in the key top.

*If you try and start it several times in a row without the transponder (or with an unrecognised transponder) in the key it can brick the ECU and you will have to get a thief, a locksmith or a dealer to reset it via the OBD port

    Update.
Key fob is now retrieved from my tub of rice and back in working order.
Thank you for all your help as I will know better what to do in future if I am daft enough to do the same trick again.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Well , in all the hundreds of times I have used that system the alarm has not gone off.
