I was about to use it as an excuse to crack open a bottle of Adnams Ghost Ship
(Not technically a IPA but I thought I'd see if it worked as well...)2 -

eastcorkram said:Maybe a stupid question, but how do you stop the alarm going off?Turn on the ignition. The alarm is turned off by using the remote or by turning on the ignition with the key.It will set again as soon as the doors lock, you can't stop it setting automatically.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

if the car is in a secure place, do you have a button on the driver's door pillar to switch alarm off?
I have one that I use if my dog was left in the car at a show.
I press the switch, close the door and lock it as normal.
It prvents the dog setting the alarm/immobiliser off.1 -
Thank you. I didn’t know that was a thing, so I will check - Would be very useful if there is one because either the dog or my mother is always setting the alarm off when I leave them in the car on their own.Update - Helpful independent locksmith (shop based so no callout charge – this is MSE after all ) tested the fob and it is still showing some signs of life, so it’s now sitting in rice in the hope that it will resurrect itself in a day or so.
Otherwise the current key in a new fob is a possibility. Helpful locksmith doesn’t think their software that they use is up-to-date enough so I would have to look elsewhere if necessary. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1 -
if you're in the AA (the car people not the alcohol ones!), they do a key replacement service.2

You don't say what year of fabia you have.
If the key is a vag group flip key you may be able to replace the section of the key with the buttons without needing any specialist coding.
My key is in two parts. Part one contains the key blade and immobiliser chip.part two contains the battery and central locking circuit board.
Part one pulls off to allow part two to split open to change the battery.
If you have this type buy a second hand part two off eBay and consult your car's manual on how to resync the central locking. This will allow you to code in the new fob to the central locking yourself.
Likely you will need both keys to avoid deleting the other key fob from the memory.1 -
2017. The only bit that’s ever come off is the battery cover, but I will get the book out and have another look. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
