Skipton B.Soc Privacy policy email

Options
Received an email from Skipton BS today telling me about their updated privacy policy.
In particular I note that

·     We will securely share some basic information about you (such as your email address) with our carefully chosen advertising partners, plus social media companies.

NO - you will NOT be sharing my email address with anyone you sc*m.  Furthermore it appears you are automatically opted IN to this and have to opt out by clicking on the link all of which seems to lead back to the genuine Skipton BS website.

https://www.skipton.co.uk/privacy-policy

Its under "Data we share - third parties social media."

I'm a bit put out that a) they think they can share my email address like this and b) its done as a default OPT in rather than an opt out by default and you have to specficially decide to opt yourself in.

Any thoughts?

Well, it's illegal under the Data Protection Act 2018 for them to share your data for advertising purposes without your consent.

But then, organisations generally don't care about GDPR, and the Information Commissioner is a chocolate teapot and no one is scared of having any repercussions by infringing people's rights
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

Thanks for the heads up.  I think it is a bit off that they don't mention 'social media' in the email subject line - at first glance it just looks like a regular tweak of a privacy policy update email.

I may be misunderstanding but I thought this was the worst part of it:

If you wish to opt out, please complete the submission below. Please note this will only prevent our adverts from being personalised.

Emphasis mine. Doesn't this mean they will still share our email addresses with the social media companies?

I no longer check the forums as regularly as I used to. If you wish to catch my attention please remember to tag me (@ircE) so I get a notification.

No. It means they will not share your details and as a result any adverts will not be personalised to you

I have not received the email. I use an add blocker anyway and have opted out of marketing emails.

I have a skipton savings acc because as a landlord I get 10 free EPC's just for having the account. They undoubtedly sell my details, after each free epc I have to call block a few "Energy savings advice" type companies who suddenly start calling me. Still worth it because I like "Free" but annoying none the less.

If anyone does contact the Information Commissioners Office about this, can you please update this thread with their response please.

I opted out, while I would of been fine with cookie tracking in regards skipton targeted adverts.  They shouldn’t need to pass my email address to a third party for marketing purposes, that comes across as they’re selling my data and I see that as a potential future security/spam risk.
