Make sure your phone is unlocked.

Pop into a local shop who sell SIMs.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

are you on contract or PAYG?
if you are on a contract and use another sim card in your phone, if anything happens to your handset ie: lost/damaged this can invalidate any insurance that you may have on your handset so becareful if you take yor registered sim out of phone!

french PAYG rates can be so expensive that it's cheaper to use your UK mobile on roaming so ask for the tariffs beforehand and also ask to be charged per second.

    Correct.

It's not the cost of calls themselves that's the problem, it's the fact they're time-dated.

The more you top up by, the longer the cash lasts. If I put a €5 top up on, it will last a week. €10 will last a fortnight, and so on.

You can get hold of a French payg SIM card from loads of shops - there is the Carphone Warehouse over here (called the phone house), many independent phone shops, and each of the big 3 networks (Orange, SFR, and Bouygues) have their own shops. Also supermarkets do SIM cards on their own brands (that piggyback the big networks).
  • Topping is is a problem from England, I have an SFR card that Vodaphone cant top up and a voucher they gave me wont work either - be careful they are time limited and do expire if there not topped up.

you can sometimes top up online from England before you go. You can with Orange.fr, assuming you can navigate their website ;)
