Information on burial site / grave location

Options
Long story short, I am trying to locate a burial / grave location in the UK.I intend to pay my respects on my return to the UK but although the family of the deceased held an open to everyone funeral service , the internment was private with strictly only immediate family permitted to attend.

I have written to the Town Clerk responsible for the cemetery but they are unable/not permitted to give out such information and directed me to contact the funeral director.

However the funeral director is a very close friend of the immediate family of the deceased and I feel sure they would not give me the details.

Is a cemetery not deemed public place/space and such information should be freely accessable.
Any ideas or sources of information would be very gratefully received so that I too can get final closure.

I have had this information from a cemetery before with no questions asked. As you say cemeteries are usually accessible and there is normally a requirement to provide information when asked so you could ask the council in question what their policy is on this.

Or try these, although I don’t know how frequently their records are updated and it may be too soon for something recent.

If you know the cemetery wont the grave be marked? Have a look around, may take a while but you should find it.

Have you looked to see if it's in DeceasedOnline.com?  Its far from complete so certainly search before signing up

There is no data protection for the deceased, it only protects living people, but many are still conscious of the deceased and also potential impacts on living relatives. Not all cemeteries are public places but even if you can physically walk round the place it doesnt mean they have to tell you stuff over the phone. The electoral register is similar, you can go and visit the list to see it but there is no free online version or anyone you can phone to get the info (though some places sell the information)

I am not 100 % sure this is where they will be.I had hoped the Town Clerk could of at least confirmed or denied it.

Guess I am being blinded by grief at the mo and will see things clearer eventually.

Does the local council have a cemeteries section online, mine does?

That would be the section to contact.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

Phone them and act like you know they are buried there, you just need directions to the plot. Either they will tell you that they aren't buried there or they will tell you the plot.

How recent is this? Are you confident this was an interment, rather than an interment of ashes?

Have you checked whether there is any obituary or funeral notice in local newspapers?

Unless the deceased was a regular parishioner, or religious member, most interments are going to be in local authority cemeteries, although places like woodland burial sites are often private.

We have needed to locate a grave in a local authority cemetery. In our case (and I suspect many others) it's Parks and Gardens.

There is no marker, and I believe some time has to be allowed before a proper headstone can be put up. Whether there was initially a temporary marker, I can't know.

After making preliminary enquiries, DH met someone on site, who took him to the plot. We've identified it in relation to nearby trees and a marked grave, as it's in a fairly anonymous area.

We've had to answer questions because we also needed to transfer ownership, but staff have been very helpful.
