@midinoon I think you are right, it isn't the working but the dissatisfaction of the current job (or office changes and politics) but the CBA to move that leads many to early retirement.  I can't be bothered with the jumping through hoops to apply for anything else.  I worked overseas too and travelled then so again CBA to get on a ferry or flight.

Well after a week away in Wales, I know where the money goes - when did holidays in the UK become so expensive?

Probably at the same time as foreign holidays becoming more expensive.

To be fair you did go in the School holidays.

Yes, we did - OH works in education, so we have no choice in that. That's one of the things I'm really looking forward to in retirement - cheaper holidays with less people around.

    Ditto!

Putting September into the holiday searches is something I can't wait to do!

I've just retired from education and we had a holiday booked to Cape Verde for 2026 Easter school holidays. Once I'd decided to retire we amended that holiday, we're now going a week later when schools will be back.

We have saved £800, plus the airport parking is also £40 cheaper. It's so exciting being able to look at holidays anytime and see how much  cheaper they are.

I felt very much like you, demotivated and totally lost the love for my job after 29 years. But I knew my pension would be tight if I went early. Then, a lightbulb went off in my head when I realised that I didn't have to STOP working, I just needed to end my current job, take my pension and then find another less stressful, part time job.

I have secured a self employed training role which I can do very flexibly and along side that and my pension, I will be earning the same as I was teaching.

Although if you look anywhere popular, you will find Sept is often booked out and not always that much cheaper.
Pretty much everybody looking for a late Summer European/UK holiday who does not have to stick to school holidays, tries to book in September, whilst the weather is still good.

As someone who has been on quite a few short holidays in the UK in September over the years, I can say that most years ( not all), the autumnal weather usually arrives in the last week.
The first week is difficult to find anywhere, so best to concentrate on the middle two weeks and be flexible.

For us it's being able to go long haul in February to the Caribbean or in November to Asia, which is what we have planned.

I will be 60 in March...coincides with 25 years in the job  ..as a carer rewarding  but very stressful...rule of 85..will kick in but only 28% of my pension will be unreduced..unless mccloud remedy  helps me out..10 k lump sum...and probably circa 12 5 k a year...that will go up by approximately  1k  or 12k lump sum..for each extra year I work...live in council flat alone...last major holiday..was LA 2018...so may stay on till 62...only have to survive 5 years till then..  will use retirement planner..if need to

More reasons I'm fed up with work:  last week while on holiday, a colleague messaged me about a problem. I replied "Oh talk to Dave about that, he can probably help". Back at work this week, problem still there.
    - Did you speak to Dave?
    - No.

My response was a less polite version of "why, oh why, did you bother to ask me?"
