It is possible to register a car to be first used for a date in the future. The registration and tax won't be valid in that first period eg a week, but the index can be known, assigned to a vehicle, the plate made up and fitted, and the vehicle driven on public roads (with trade plates) - also meaning it can be delivered to a customer.

Maybe this is where the confusion lies.

Maybe your dealer also forgot to tell you it can't be used until xxxxx date.
Thanks for buying the new car sir, by the way it’s illegal to drive it for a week 😂

In the old days of tax disks the post office would  write “53 weeks” or similar where they would normally write 6/12 months.

"Thanks for buying your new car sir, I know its 24th August delivery date, if you wanted to use it immediately we would need to register it on a 25 plate. If you don't use it for a week, we can put it on a 75 plate. Don't worry, we can deliver it to your house, it just can't be used until 1st Sept".

Yes, new cars can be taxed in months and weeks.
It can only be done at the time of registration.

It's to save all that beginning of the month nonsense that some have been discussing.

So you can buy a brand new car and pick it up at anytime in the month and it'll come with the remained of that month and a further 12 months, if they have filled the form in correctly.

Just check out the form for V55/4. You can see the period of tax is in months and weeks. (point 3)

That's a different issue.  We're talking about road tax.

Registration and tax are intimately tied when registering/taxing a new car. You can't do one without the other. I know (I used to work in the motor trade industry dealing with new cars/vehicles) there is a mechanism to register a car for a future date, but that registration is not "valid" until that date. I am suggesting, unless there is a definitive link to a gov.uk address to show otherwise, the start date for new car tax and validity of registration are the same date.

And yet despite the evidence that I bought a car - it was taxed and registered and driven home on 31/10 and the tax runs until 01/11 you don’t believe it! 🙂

Its not that I don't believe it, its that a link/reference would be really helpful to confirm.
  • Why overcomplicate by making it a moral issue, when selling a car privately you are required to describe it accurately and if you didn’t disclose that would be grounds for a small claim.

So what you’re really asking is should you be dishonest?
