I've packed it away to return, (one of the glass jars had smashed and there was quite a lot of broken glass and sticky jam everywhere) but I dont recall any straps for plates. There are handles and I thought it was a really nice hamper. The goods in mine had a reasonably long life. However, I didnt check the christmas pudding.

When my OH saw the contents he was also impressed and told me to order a couple more (in addition to the one I need to exchange)

Thanks very much jeppy :) to order more despite the broken object's a good recommendation. I'll work on mr passion8 ;) or search Google as to how to turn a basket into a picnic hamper. It can't be that difficult, can it? :D;)

    Hi Passion8.
If you are reasonably craft wise, it should be easy to turn them into picnic baskets. If you use elastic you can thread it through the wicker and secure on the inside. Then you just slot your plates etc into the elastic.
I am hoping to be able to do that with the ones that I have ordered.
It would also be possible to line them with checked (gingham) fabric as well.
A good tip is to make sure that you use lightweight plates etc and if you use salt and pepper pots make sure that they will close. Or s & p gets everywhere.

  • Cheers for this, my girlfriend and I made up a hamper like this for her grandparents at Christmas, it'll look a lot better next year in one of these proper hampers (and I think we can look after the contents as well).
You can't go wrong with carpet bombing...
  • ive ordered one thanks OP and I can collect from a nearby store, even better as it saves me the postage! thanks again

    Thanks Mooloo :D

Somewhere, I've got some expensive looking black ribbon from a Jo Malone candle or air freshener set. It held things in place with ribbon that had metal bars on the ends (a bit like those green things with metal end things you buy from office stationers when you're filing documents away - I've forgotten the name :o yet order loads)

And regarding the gingham idea - if the dates on the foodstuffs I have left are December 2008 for example ;) , I might just cover those in gingham too :D

Only problem with ribbon is that it has no give, so if you take a plate etc out the others are not secure. Also you need a way of adjusting the fastenings on it if not. Elastic is better. Black knicker elastic is a good one.!! You can use a rivit or other fastening if you want to make it pretty, but just turning it through and sewing it to itself will work.
Only problem with covering jars with dates is they take the cover off to open them.
Perhaps it would be an idea to start to replace such items one at a time when you see that the dates are going to be in date at time you give the gift and a reasonable amount of time thereafter!
The wine wont be a problem.!
