  • No contract has been signed, just a full payment of £1,200.00 which I was pushed to do
  • Just want to say that you guys are AMAZING and I appreciate you help.  Weddings are sooooo expensive and it was a gift for the wedding but then Son & DIL to be (who is also amazing) decided that they did not want to use them at the wedding, hence the cancellation.

When you say pushed, how so?  What date did you make the booking, and what date is the wedding?

Is it possible they have cashflow problems, and that's why they're pushy?

There is no legal requirement for a written contract let alone that it's signed. Needs to be offer, acceptance and consideration (aka payment) unless you are in Scotland where a form of contract is created even without consideration.

It becomes harder to say to what the agreed terms were without a contract but it appears their website has their standard terms so probably likely it would be considered that those were the agreed terms unless you can evidence otherwise.

Cashflow is a perennial problem for almost every business. Bills still need to be paid whatever. No cash. No business.

The booking was made on 28 June 2024 and I paid £1,200 in full by credit card.  I was not informed that I could pay a deposit I was asked for the full payment up front.  Notice of cancellation was given to them in writing via email on 28 May 2025 and the Wedding is 7 September 2025.

That doesn't really sound like being pushed. If you wasn't happy with the sales technique, you could have walked away at the time. Did you ask if you could pay a deposit?

That's not being pushed, in my opinion.  I don't think you've got any grounds for complaint there.

You've got to hope they get a replacement booking.  Given that you booked them 14 months in advance, you can see the potential for them struggling to get a replacement booking in the next six weeks.  I should imagine that theirs isn't a service that is normally booked at relatively short notice.

Think it's important to point out that if this was agreed verbally then unless at the time of making the payment in full and the company informed the OP that by making the payment they contract is subject to the terms and conditions online (in these types of scenarios, I very rarely see that happen), then those terms did not form part of the contract.

In that case, the OP could have an argument that they had a right to cancel by giving reasonable notice and 3 months is usually considered reasonable for most contracts, ultimately having a right to refund. If the OP has witnesses who were present to corroborate that story, the OP may have a case to argue.

Wedding arrangements are normally made 18 months to two years in advance (if not longer for a popular service or venue).

So if dispute that three months is reasonable notice.
