How to these round the world tickets work? Are there a set number of flights? Do you need to book the route in advance etc?

Depends on which one you buy you can either buy a single airline or an airline alliance one
My feeling is that the alliance one is better as it gives a greater choice of airlines to fly on
you usually get a finite number of stops and usually can’t double back on yourself but nothing stopping you booking a separate low cost ticket between stops if it makes things work better for you especially in Asia where you can pick up flights really cheap
its a wonderful experience and half the fun is the planning trying to maximise your bucket list destinations within the terms of your ticket
please keep us updated on your plans

If you are going to Garmisch-Partenkirchen I recommend the Partenkirchen side, less americans and cheaper.  I have stayed at Reindl’s Partenkirchener Hof twice, about a mile from train station making everything accessible.

I booked a place that's got good reviews and was so much cheaper than many close by.....this was a few months back and prices have just continued to go up since

French Polynesia and the Cook Islands
expensive and a long way to go but an amazing experience
Sadly we lost our amazing Osteopath as he found 2 Osteopath jobs available in the Cook Islands.  His girlfriend is also an Osteopath and they got the jobs.  From the postcards he sends regularly it sounds an amazing place.  😀

I was lucky enough to go to Switzerland as a child.  It was magical.  I visited  it once as an adult, many years later.  What amused me was that the souvenirs had hardly changed 😄
