Dodgy govuk message

Options
Just received a text message about applying for winter fuel payment, liked at it and they wanted my Debit or credit card number, the DWP already knows my bank details as they pay my benefits into it. Just letting everyone know what they are doing now, I’ve given them no information and reported it and blocked them.

Yes I had one of those yesterday. Reported, deleted and blocked. Total scam as I’m more than a decade away from state pension age.

I’ve had three such texts. Clues - no-one needs to apply for it, payment will be made automatically, and being urged to apply/respond quickly almost always indicates a scam.

Not strictly true, there are some circumstances in which a claim has to be made (although obviously this scam isn't one of them!).

The payment is automatic, you don't need to do anything to get it – beware of scams
One of the benefits of the new system is all State Pensioner households will be paid it automatically. For the vast majority, there is no need to apply to claim it.
Yet sadly scam texts and on social media, and likely email too, have already started to spring up with links or phone numbers trying to get people to claim. If you see one of these it is a scam. Do not reply.

Forward to 7726 (think it's that one, spells out SPAM in the old letter/number format) so operators can block them

Be mindful of whatsapp calls/messages too as they come on there

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
