MTD for income tax for VAT registered sole trader

Please can someone shed some light on when my husband needs to start sending digital returns for his income tax.
He is self employed and VAT registered, his turnover is around £65K (His VAT is already provided digitally using bridging software).
I have regularly looked on Gov.uk and seen that sole traders with income over £50K to start MTD for income tax at the start of the next tax year.
Is this correct?

Yes 6th April 2026 according to HMRCI imagine that it will be similar to VAT returns you are already doing so you will have a head start on some people. This is from the page above in a grey box a short way down:HMRC is urging eligible customers to sign up to a testing programme on GOV.UK and start preparing now.Have you done this?

Yes, you are right. Your spouse will have to start using Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax on April 6, 2026, because his business makes more than £50,000 a year. He will need to keep digital records, send in updates every three months, and file an end-of-year return using software that works with MTD. Based on his 2024-2025 tax return, HMRC will let him know if he needs to comply. Sign up early and make sure the software you choose works with MTD.Mangoants said:Please can someone shed some light on when my husband needs to start sending digital returns for his income tax.
