Announced today, but will anyone notice the difference?  I kind of think they’ve just made official what is already happening!

Do they mean just letters, or parcels as well?  We'll notice the latter as our (parcel) deliveries are quite good round here.

I dropped off a parcel at the post office on Monday morning; it was sent tracked 48. That parcel was delivered today at 4:19 pm. Evri parcel sent at the same time, that was delivered yesterday morning. Royal Mail is terrible!

Custardy (a former RM employee) used to talk about it on here a long time ago. It has long been their goal. Keeping second class mail at a reasonable price is part of their deal with the government. As they can't raise the prices too much they'll just diminish the service.

It depends. I've been trying to get a service added on to my RM account for several months and only just managed it. Every email sent takes 3-5 days for a reply, even if it's just to confirm what they have sent to me. So I'm loathe to defend RM.
However, as a business delivery service they tend to be a bit more reliable than Evri. Evri is generally standard and next day delivery. Royal Mail have dozens of services for each from private customers to the priority service, and prices, they give Amazon. I think I get about 10 options to send something for next day delivery.

Whereas I had something posted to me Tracked 48 on Monday afternoon, nearly 5pm, and it arrived the following day!  It wasn't even as if it was local, it came from the other side of the country.

(I think our local delivery office and the mail centre one level up must be decently staffed or something, because parcel delivery here is pretty consistently good.)

To be honest, apart from the odd birthday/Christmas card I rarely see an incoming second class stamp, so not sure what difference this will make, it's not as if first and second class letters are delivered by different posties. Only thing it will do is reduce the reliability of second class.

if I get one or two "meaningful" letters a month that's about it

Looking forward to the postie shovelling endless pizza flyers and other junk mail through my door every other day though!

I don't think that will be affected by this.
