Hi all

My mobile contract with EE ends soon. I pay £8pm for their 'Essential SIM 5GB' plan.

Unlimited calls and txts. Although I dont use the phone very often.

Im nearly always on a wifi network, so rarely use any data, although it is handy when Im out for Google Maps, or a podcast/emails.

Does £8pm for this seems expensive? I feel like I could get better elsewhere? Or perhaps Ill chat to EE and see if I cna negotiate them down if I sign up for another 24 month contract.

No point in a 24 month contract, it will go up by at least £1.80 each Spring, and you are stuck with it. If you go to Europe on holiday, new EE contracts don’t include free roaming.

As others mentioned, ditch and switch. There are virtual networks that are significantly better value and you aren’t stuck with a long contract (30 days rolling, no contract usually).

I read somewhere, I think it may well have been here on MSE, that the average person only uses 3GB of data a month. There's an awful lot of people paying an awful lot of money for data they don't use. I have a 1 year contract with O2 which I find useful for the European roaming (25GB per month). £8, increased to £9.60 in April, but I'm currently paying nothing for by using credit generated on Airtime rewards. I'll get a new deal, hopefully £8 again in a black friday deal in October.

ETA we have to use O2 or a carrier on that network as our house is in a not-spot.

Some of the virtual networks are very flexible, in that you can change your package every month at the click of a mouse (or tap of the screen). That way you can cater for being away from home/WiFi quite easily and without incurring a contract extension. For the price of a couple of pints of beer and a bag of crisps you can have a lot of data if need be.
