Can I transfer my no. from contract to PAYG?

I am currently with carphone warehouse o2, I really want the nokia 6680 but CW won't let me upgrade - depending on who I speak to it's either Not Available, £129.99 or £89.99.

I want to take out a new 02 contract (has to be 02 as they are the only ones who include 0845/0870 in the cross net minutes) through e2save or OSPS but they say I cannot transfer my o2 number as they both said they are part of CW. I could, however transfer my number to 02 online or through an 02 shop and keep my number but they don't stock the phone I want and when they do it will be £199.99!

My cunning plan is to port my number onto a PAYG sim (any network apart from 02) then when that is done port my number to my 'new' o2 contract.

My question is how do I go about porting my number to the PAYG sim, I already have the PAC code so do I just buy a sim (eg. Orange) and once I have bought it ring Orange to port over?

Does anyone have prior knowledge of porting from contract to PAYG - how long does it take? Will they charge me when I port back to o2?

Sorry for rambling but wanted to give all the info I have. Thanks in advance for any help.

Porting is mainly used to go from network to network.

If you are just going from contract to PAYG within the same network, just write a letter giving 30 days to cancel and say you would like the number transfered onto payg with them still.

I need to transfer to a different network, anything other than o2 so that I can then get a new o2 contract and take my PAYG (Orange,Vodafone, T-mobile or whatever) to my new 02 contract. In short they won't let me take my CPW o2 number to another o2 contract.

I have only ported "within" networks not to.

Call customer service for the PAYG network and see what they say.

I ported my phone number from Vodafone contract to Virgin PAYG a year or so ago and if I remember correctly, it took about a week.

    Thanks

Yes, if you just buy a Orange SimCard, you can port your number to that and then approach CPW/e2save, etc as a new customer. Porting from one network to another generally takes a week (but can take longer). So you're looking at about 1 week to port to Orange and another week to port over to o2 with CPW/e2save, etc.

The main networks themselves don't charge for porting but CPW/e2save, etc may make an admin charge for porting your number from orange to o2.
