A Weird Tax Problem

Options
Hi!
I am just trying to help my daughter as she has a really weird situation going on with her tax.
So it all started in 2022. My daughter noticed a random company appear on her online HMRC account that she was supposedly working for and because her actual employer for the job she did work was also there - she was suddenly getting heavily taxed as had '2 jobs' which she has not had.
She called them (we all know how difficult it is to get through to HMRC!) They advised theyd do an investigation but never did - my daughter had to chase this several times over a period of time.
They eventually agreed to mark it as she didnt work for this other company.
it disappeared very briefly but soon appeared back again.
Ever since then she has been trying to contact them about it and they now just say theres nothing they can do!!!!
Shes been in tears on the phone to them multiple times and they just apologise and say they cant help - its almost as if they dont believe her so are refusing to do anything?
So who can help then?
I cannot believe its still a dead end after nearly 3 years?
My daughter cannot afford to be so heavily taxed.
My daughter contacted the 'intruder' company to explain the situation and enquire about the person that is working for them with what seems like the same NI number. The company basically told her to go away and that their paperwork all checks out and is correct.
I cant even remember every single stupid detail along the way but the long and short of it is that either HMRC have issued 2 people the same NI number?
Or maybe someone is committing fraud with my daughters details?
We cant think of how else this could happen?
The latest is my daughter has contacted our local MP and they have wrote a letter to HMRC - so will see how that goes? They might just ignore it? who knows! We have no faith in HMRC at all.
The whole thing is just like a bad comedy sketch its that ridiculous!
I just wondered if anyone else has had this happen to them? Any experience or advice or knowledge would be a real help right now and we would be very grateful!
Thanks for reading!

What tax code is now being used by the genuine employer?

So is the company she actually works for legit ? And does she get regular/accurate payslips ? If so then presumably it’s easy to prove the single income ?

Or is the main employer less than honest and is there a connection between the ‘employers’ with one subcontracting to the other and sharing the costs of the employee ?

BR is the tax code she has for her genuine employment

The company she works for is definately legit. Its Marston's Brewery
The 'intruder' company is in hull and is nothing related to her company.
All of her previous employers records have gone from her online tax account now too.
It will definitely be easy to prove she doesnt work for this other company but it is whether HMRC decide they actually want to help as the last twice she has spoke to them its been a sorry we cant help you!
    Utter madness!

Very dodgy. She needs to get this sorted out. Has she checked her pension forecast. Where are her NI contributions being allocated?

I appreciate this is not full resolving things but in the short term has she tried updating her estimated earnings for the genuine job to a figure she thinks is realistic (it's just an estimate, no one can know 100% for certain what they will earn in the current tax year).

And then amend the estimated pay for the other job to £0.

This will mean her tax code allowances are allocated to the genuine job.
Ive told her  what you have suggested and she daren't change anything on there she said or they will think she's admitting to working there, plus it also says they will have live updates from the employer each month - also she has to tell HMRC she 'no longer works there' but that would imply she has worked there at some point which she hasnt... gosh its all very complicated isnt it! Thank you though for the suggestion - she's too worried to meddle with anything on that 'intruder' employer though :(

My daughter cannot afford to be so heavily taxed.

In what way is she getting heavily taxed? The "rogue" employment is suffering the tax deduction not your daughter. The HMRC are simply receiving the monthly payroll data. Not collecting any further taxes.

If her tax rate is BR, she is losing about £2000 a year?

I think you have misunderstood how things currently are.  If the op's daughter has one genuine job and that employer is using a BR code she will almost certainly be paying more tax than is necessary.

It could of course be less tax than is necessary but only if she was a high earner.
