Having said that I'd never cut something so fine that you might be arguing over whether you were on day 27, 28 or 29.
    I would agree.

The OP made a purchase on 7th June and returned for a refund on 5th July.
Next interpreted their 28-day return period as including the day of purchase, hence expiry 4th July.
The OP interpreted the 28-day return period as starting the day after purchase, hence expiry 5th July.

It is unclear why the OP waited until the very last moment to seek to return this purchase.
Regardless, the store offer the OP a credit voucher instead of the refund.

For practical purposes, how much effort is it really worth expending to get the refund rather than just buy something else in the store using the credit voucher?

It seems like the kind of thing that would make any retailer decide that allowing a fairly long returns period on in-store purchases all to be too much bother and simply revert to consumer rights., which would be no refund for in-store purchases.

On 7th June, I went into a Next store and bought a pair of jeans.  I tried to return them today for a full refund and was told that I had to get a voucher as it was outside of their 28 day full refund returns policy window.

I was told that they start their '28 day' clock from midnight the night before (16hrs before I even entered the shop...).  Is anyone aware if there is a Next clothing store in the UK which is even open at midnight?  I'm pretty sure there isn't...  And doesn't this mean that their true full refund returns policy is 27 days since they're saying I would have had to have bought the jeans on 6th June to get a full refund today.
Another way of phrasing that is "at midnight at the start of the day of purchase".

Take the voucher.  It's more than you're entitled to.
Shirley the simplest way of phrasing it is " the day of purchase counts as day one of 28"?
Who is Shirley and what has she got to do with anything ?

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Next’s latest reported profits were 1 billion pounds, I don’t think they’ll be changing their policy due a customer causing a fuss over a pair of jeans ;)

These companies know what they are doing and the odd customer that causes them a loss is not of concern as long as the numbers keep going up (which with Next they do).

Thank you.  I can't tell you how disappointed I am that nobody else picked up on this.

Disagree wtih some of the comments here.
I would read "within 28 days" as inclusive of day 28. Taking to the extreme, "within 1 day"  clearly wouldn't mean on 0 days.

Also if such retailers allow more than the minimum statutory returns doesn't mean OP is getting more than they should, and Next have to abide by what they agreed to incentivise the sale.

So the question is just what is their contractual policy re when the 28 days start. First port of call is what the signage in store and/or receipt stated. If nothing, then for reference this says it starts the day after collected from store (this is the policy for online orders, but can't see anything specific for in person)

Next online delivery’s do state  returns 28 days from the day after delivery.

in store doesn’t say that ,so assume it’s 28 days from when you leave the store in which case the op was to late

why leave it to so long ?
