No, they will not connect via WiFi.

The replacement is Voice over Internet and just about any handset will plug into a dedicated phone socket on your broadband router or a separate adapter.

If you want a set of wireless handsets the master base unit will plug in as above.

When I use my mobile at home it says "calling by WiFi"

I'm surprised they still selling conventional phones since they're being switched off and there doesn't seem to be much choice in VoIP phones??

Maybe we have to wait until we got no phone at all 😁

You don't need a VoIP phone when the landline service over copper is removed, all the gubbins is in the router or adapter, just plug in a normal handset.

WiFi calling on a mobile is completely different to landline VoIP.

My mum is 85 and paying £40 month for a std landline and has never plugged the WiFi router in
Should I just get a cheaper broadband service and plug the main handset (she has 3) into the router?
    Would that work?

You can get WiFi VOIP phones and if you use a standalone VOIP provider, there is no reason you couldn't use one, in the same way you could use an app on you phone over WiFi or mobile data. DECT however is a very reliable solution for home phones and typically gives coverage beyond what a basic router/WiFi will provide. People have also come to expect that using a cordless home phone gives a very good experience over longer distances. Which is why BT for example build a DECT basestation into their router for digital voice.

For your mother, you can just plug a phone into a router unless the ISP is providing a bundled phone service with the broadband. Is she paying for broadband + phone, or just phone?

If she wants to move to a VoIP service with her current provider for a cheaper deal she'll have to order a digital voice service, which may need need new  cabling from outside.

I presume she does have broadband as you say she has a router, but it is not as simple as connecting that and plugging in a handset.

Not all ISPs are offering a phone service these days.

What EXACTLY is the product she has right now?

She currently paying for Anytime landline calling (cheapest I could find) and broadband (router still in the box). Are you saying she can just plug her phone into the router?

    No.

You would have to order a phone service that comes via the router, whether you change ISPs or not.

Why don’t you say who the current provider is , it will make things easier to explain
