Do you have legal cover? You could potentially use small claims court to recover the losses. It may not be worth the effort though, depends how much it goes up by.
How would the OP quantify his losses?

His renewal premium may increase, but the insurer won't tell him how much of that (if any) is related to the accident.

Likewise, any competing quotes won't be broken down.

I got hit by a police car. The police car t boned me at a cross roads, went straight through a give way. It was a big hit, lifted my car off the ground, both cars write offs. I was very lucky, it hit rear door behind the driver's seat.

Anyhow the police admitted full liability, it was a brand new vehicle and he said he hit the accelerator instead of the brake. I got a full payout, injury, physio, excess etc. However I wanted my solicitor to push back on the first offer as it didn't cover my own insurance premiums going up. They refused to ask the police solicitor for that, said it wouldn't form part of the claim, and if I was persistent I would have to pay the solicitors' fees (I had legal cover). Ok, we'll leave it then!

It's my policy, a multi car policy and my Son is a named driver on my wife's car. He uses it occasionally to visit mates - don't worry, we're not fronting.

Wherever I go for insurance now, we are going to have to declare this accident and no doubt pay additional premiums. I fail to see how his driving could be at fault. He was going down the road, saw the car on the opposite side of the road swerve over the road towards him, executed an emergency stop and came to a halt before the 3rd party hit him
One good reason why separate policies can work out cheaper in the long run.
As you would not have to declare the claim on your policy.

To late now, but if it is only occasionally, then he could take out short term ins himself, & not effect either of the policies.
