  • Thanks everyone - when I sign into icloud, it wants the phone number for two factor authentication reasons and I have no clue what the phone number is. I have my login email and password, but that number is so old and I cannot remember what it was. I have searched all my contacts (this was an old phone for one of my kids) and cannot find this number - it tells me the last two digits were 98.
I cannot progress any further than this and Tesco are saying they absolutely cannot stop this payment without having to close my account.
I have no idea what to do..
  • and yes... imagine how many perhaps millions of people are not dealing with these small payments because of the hassle it is to deal with it! Quite unbelievable really :(

Tell Tesco to cease the payment, it is a requirement of the Financial Conduct Authority that they do so, see my earlier link. The Tesco call taker is plain wrong if they say they cannot.

Tesco's can only stop if if the merchant is using a CPA, which they should be doing for a reoccurring payment, but not if they are just doing each as an individual transaction. Certainly some firms are known to fly in the face of how things should be done, certainly Amazon for a long time weren't using 3D Secure and other technologies that all companies were being told they must but clearly they have enough persuasion and potential revenue generation that some rules can be bent for them.

When I had a similar problem with AmEx (a phantom mobile phone rolling contract that somehow got restarted), AmEx blocked all transactions from that mobile phone co.
Do you have a second credit card? How much bother would it be to you close your Tesco account, more or less than £12-a-year-forever worth?

It would be a huge pain because I currently owe it quite a lot of money.
