Help with faulty phone/SIM/Can't get out of contract

I hope this is the right place to post this problem.  I'm posting for a friend for reasons that will become obvious.  He had a Samsung Galaxy S8+, which stopped working.  He bought another identical one 3 weeks ago, and changed the SIM over to the new phone, but the new phone then developed the same fault as the old one.  It only works for a few minutes very occasionally.  He's with iD Mobile, so he contacted them and they spent some time on the phone with them (using a friend's phone), but they were unable to sort the problem. When the SIM from his phone was put in the friend's phone, it appeared to work, but when the friend put their own SIM back in, for a while after, his phone didn't work either

So iD said they'd get their tech team to text/ring him.  Maybe they have, but with a broken phone, he can't tell.  They also sent him a new SIM, but even putting that in the new phone hasn't solved the problem.  It's as bad as ever.

He's now been without a working phone for 3 weeks and is hugely upset, as for medical reasons, he needs constant access to text messages and the ability to receive calls, so this is badly affecting his life.  Now, he just wants to cancel his contract with iD and go back to the company he used to be with, even though they were far more expensive.  But being only 7 months into a 24-month contract, there is a hefty exit penalty.

Please, has anyone any suggestions as to how to fix the phone/Sim problem, and/or get out of his contract without such a big penalty, as they are not helping him to sort the problem, and he's basically been without his vital means of communication for over 3 weeks.  Many thanks in advance.

If the SIM works ok in your friends mobile then it would seem it's your mobile/model that has an issue and not the SIM or id mobile.

I can't see you getting out of this contract because of your mobile issues.

If you can afford to buy another mobile like what your mate has then that may solve the issue.

    Good luck.

    Edit.
If my post doesn't make much senses it maybe because I got confused with you friend, your mate that was owner of the SIM and trying different mobiles.

There's an obvious question, why replace an 8 y.o. phone that's no longer receiving security/OS updates with exactly the same model?

Does the iD SIM work OK in another phone (yours? a friend's?). If yes, source another phone.
