Are you perhaps conflating "safe place" with "secret place"?

I can see that leaving a note on the door saying
"My front door key is hidden under the big rock on the left under the window" might defeat its own purpose.

But a note saying
"If I'm not in, please don't leave my parcel out here on the step. Hand it to Mrs. Jones next door at No.5 who has agreed to take it in for me" sounds reasonable to me.
