Help! I have just changed my sim from one network to another and the new provider has changed my telephone number even though I asked to keep old one. They said "We issue each and every contract a new system generated number. The port in takes 24 hours to complete depending on the date you select. You will retain the number." Is this right? No one can get hold of me now, no messages etc. Thanks very much.

Have you obtained and used the PAC code from your old provider?

Yes its right, but its not permanent, can be easily solved by doing this:
    1. Get a pac code from your old network
    2. Give that PAC code to your new network

I gave them my PAC code right at the beginning.

How it works is the new network sends you a SIM which will have a new number supplied by them. You then supply them with the PAC from your original network.
The new network will change your number on the next working day.
Giving the new network you PAC up front may, or may not, work. Don’t forget the sequence is for the switch over to take place on the next working day…

If you'll excuse the attempt at humour:
Yes, it always works like this.
I've switched the same number between providers since the 1990s and it always takes a day (or more) for a PAC transfer to go through.
Your old SIM is probably still live with your old number on it. It'll remain live until the day of the switch.
